History at Beaconfields

The History curriculum at Beaconfields seeks to inspire a love of learning about the past, to help our children develop a deep and broad understanding of History.

Ultimately, our vision for our History curriculum is one that inspires children to become engaged and informed citizens, who are equipped with the skills and knowledge to navigate the complex world we live in.

Intent

History at Beaconfields aims to develop our children’s understanding of the past through the exploration of key concepts. By focusing on these concepts, we aim to promote a deeper understanding of the past and help children to develop critical thinking and analytical skills. Furthermore, our curriculum is inclusive and diverse, reflecting the experiences and contributions of people from all backgrounds and cultures. Our curriculum will help children develop an appreciation for the diversity of human experience and will foster a sense of empathy and understanding for people from different times and places.

Key Concepts:

  1. Change and continuity.
  2. Cause and effect.
  3. Significance.
  4. Chronology.
  5. Legacy.
  6. Similarities and differences.

Implementation

  1. Establish clear learning outcomes: We establish clear learning outcomes that reflect the key concepts that are to be covered.
  2. Develop lesson plans: At Beaconfields we provide staff with detailed lesson plans that outline the content to be covered and the Rosenshine principles. These plans reflect the key concepts.
  3. Selecting resources: We provide teachers with carefully selected resources, including primary and secondary sources, multimedia documents and relevant text. These resources reflect experiences and perspectives of people from all backgrounds and cultures.
  4. Rosenshine principles: Rosenshine is used to emphasise clear and concise instruction. Teachers are also encouraged to make connections between prior learning and new learning.
  5. Professional development: Teachers revive a monthly staff meeting which covers the content been covered for that term.
  6. Evaluation: At the end of every unit we hold exit interviews with; teachers and children. These ensure that we are meeting our intended goals and also identify areas for improvement.
